Coaching "
A coach is someone who helps you hear what you don't want to hear,
who helps you see what you don't want to see, in order that you can
be who you have always known you could be." Tom Landry -
Former Coach for the Dallas Cowboys.
The Process
It doesn't matter where you are coming from, what
matters is where you want to go. Coaching will empower the individual
manager or the entire team to successfully reach or exceed their goals.
If you put a little bit in each day of each week of each month of every
year, get some feedback and get a chance to measure your success, the
likelihood of being successful is going to increase because it really is
a process of successive approximations.
Most don’t realize change on
the first or second try, especially when it is
behavioural change. So, it
is really fine-tuning behaviours as you are going along. Plus, personal
and professional growth is a very positive, gratifying experience.
Coaching With Assessments
Coaching helps an individual put a mirror in front
of them and take a snapshot of their current strengths and developmental
needs, as well as career goals and aspirations. The purpose of the coach
is to take an individual on a development journey and facilitate him or
her in that journey without making decisions for them but helping guide
them through that journey as a supporter and motivator. Behavioural
assessments simply make that snapshot more objective, focused and
comprehensive.
What is business coaching?
Business coaching is an ongoing, interactive partnership designed to
help you achieve your professional and personal goals, more quickly
and easily. The coach’s role is to help you strengthen your skills,
implement new strategies and discover solutions to major issues or
obstacles, with the goal of achieving meaningful, lasting results.
As an objective third party and trusted partner, a coach works with
you on the most important aspects of your business and life
How is coaching different than consulting or
counseling?
Coaching assumes that the entrepreneur or business leader is an
expert when it comes to their business. The coach’s role is to help
the client clarify what they really want and then develop strategies
and skills – based on each client’s unique personality and style -
to achieve their goals, quickly.
A consultant provides expert advice and knowledge on specific issues
or situations. Consulting is excellent when you need to acquire
knowledge or expertise that you don’t already have, or when you need
an objective third party to help understand situations or issues and
then provide recommendations. Generally, the client is expected to
implement the recommendations on their own.
Performance Coaching
is designed to empower executives, managers, and
supervisors to develop personally and produce more satisfying
results for themselves and their organizations.
Performance coaching works! An article in Workforce Magazine,
October 2000, describes a study comparing training alone to coaching
combined with training. This study showed that training alone
increased productivity by 22.4 percent, while training plus coaching
increased productivity by 88 percent.
